Volleyball Falls to Providence in League Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Hartford (6-11 overall, 0-1 America East) volleyball team dropped its league opening match at Providence College on Sunday afternoon, falling in three sets (17-25, 20-25, 21-25). Junior outside hitter Sareeta Nethersole led all players in the match with 16 kills.

Nethersole was the only Hartford player to record double figure kills while Maya Louis joined her in leading the team with eight kills and also led Hartford with a .312 hitting average. Kaya Fitzgerald was the only other player to finish in double figures, leading Providence with 11 kills. Louis finished the match for Hartford with three errors in 16 attacks, while Nethersole suffered five errors in 43 attempts for a.256 hitting average.

Also among Hartford's offensive leaders was Lindsay Anderson and Corinne Horanzy who finished with six and five kills, respectively. As a team, Hartford hit .152 overall with 41 kills and 22 errors in 125 attempts Junior setter Jackie Tamburri finished with 36 of Hartford 39 total assists to lead all setters in the match.

Tamburri also led Hartford's defensive efforts collecting 14 digs for her team-leading eighth double double of the season. She was joined in leading Hartford defensively by freshman libero Paola Llerandi who added 12 digs, while Nethersole and Dionna Kirton finished with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

The Hawks continue conference play with a pair of matches in the week ahead, welcoming Albany and Binghamton to the Reich Family Pavilion next weekend. First on the schedule will be the Albany Great Danes who were picked to win the America East Championship in a vote of league head coaches. The Hawks and Great Danes are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start on Friday, October 4.
