Spiritual But Not Religious? Try Us Out

It’s increasingly common these days for people to say they are “spiritual but not religious." But exploring that spirituality – maybe even learning about other religions – doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. We’re all busy these days, overwhelmed sometimes by the sheer volume of “to-do-ness” in our lives.

Right down the road from West Hartford, Hartford Seminary welcomes the seekers and the spiritually curious. We can help you put all that rushing around into perspective, and maybe even allow you take a step back from it.

Take a look at our complete roster of January courses, if you’re interested in a five-day immersion experience. Or check out our spring courses if you’d like to take classes at a more lenient pace.

Here are a few that might interest the seekers out there:

If you’ve considered changing careers to find more meaning in what you do, you might be interested in our five-day January course called Chaplaincy Models and Methods. Becoming a chaplain prepares you for rewarding job opportunities in schools, colleges and universities, prisons, health care facilities, fire and police departments, and the military. We have both Islamic Chaplaincy and Multifaith Chaplaincy programs, and our graduates have gone on to jobs at premier institutions such as Duke, Princeton, Williams, Yale, Trinity and Wesleyan.

During our spring semester, Ministry in a Multicultural World meets on Mondays from 5 to 8:50 p.m. and it’s taught by two dynamic instructors: Prof. Benjamin Watts, director of the Black Ministries Program and a Faculty Associate in Religions and Community Life, and Prof. Miriam Therese Winter, Professor of Liturgy, Worship, Spirituality and Feminist Studies and Director of our Women's Leadership Institute.

Ben and MT, as they are known around here, will look at ministry in everyday life – in the home, at work, out in the community as well as in communities of faith, and in the world beyond. The course is designed for those who feel called to ministry and to service, but not to formal ordination.

We hope you’ll take a look at what we have to offer, either as a degree-seeking student or as an auditor who just wants to test the waters. What you’re seeking might be just down the road.
