Celebrating the True Meaning of Memorial Day

Annual ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, May 25, at Fairview Cemetery and St. Peter Claver Parish Center in West Hartford.

Jean-Paul and Marion Berard are once again coordinating the annual Memorial Day tradition of decorating the graves of veterans who are buried at Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford.

The Berards have coordinated Memorial Day and Veterans Day flag planting ceremonies at Fairview Cemetery for more than 30 years, and have been assisted by countless scout troops and other volunteers from the community.

All are invited to participate beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at Fairview Cemetery on Pleasant St. Following the flag planting, a program that includes music and speakers will take place at the St. Peter Claver Parish Center which is located across the street from the cemetery. West Hartford Mayor Scott Slifka and Minority Leader Denise Berard Hall will be among the speakers.

Refreshments will also be served.

Anyone who has a relative or friend buried at Fairview whose grave is not properly identified as that of a veteran is encouraged to contact the cemetery office at 860-521-5270 so that a flag can be planted there.
