Fifth Annual 'Fire on ICE' Chanukah Celebration Held in West Hartford

Giant ice menorah is lit in Blue Back Square to mark the fifth day of Chanukah.

Chabad of Hartford held its fifth annual “Fire on ICE” Chanukah celebration at Blue Back Square on Sunday night.

The festivities, which marked the fifth night of Chanukah, included lighting a giant, sculpted ice menorah, fire juggling, music, face painting for the kids, a free raffle, songs by the Hebrew Academy Children’s Choir and food.

Rabbi Shaya Gopin said that Chanukah commemorates two miracles: the Maccabees defeating the Greeks, who were oppressing the Jews, and the miracle of the oil at the high temple, which was only supposed to last one day, but instead burned for eight days.

“This is a celebration of the power of faith and goodness,” Gopin said.

Gopin said that Chabad of Hartford selected Blue Back Square as a location for the celebration because it was the most public location for people to gather as a community.
