Remodeling Tip: Draw It Up First

Don't start a remodel without a design you are happy with.

There are times when I’ll get a call from a contractor asking if I can help a homeowner determine the overall plan of what they want to do.  In other words, the homeowner needs help working out their design.  Working out the actual design will increase your overall satisfaction of the finished product and reduce costly changes during construction.

Developing a detailed floor plan is vital to a successful remodeling project since it requires the homeowner and contractor to think of the project details and resolve potential issues that invariably come up.  You may be surprised but there are a number of elements involved in any remodeling project and putting them on paper will help identify all the items that you’ll have to address.  A floor plan also helps most people to visualize the space you’ll be creating.  If two dimensional drawings are difficult for you to comprehend, there is computer aided design software that creates three dimensional images to better envision the design being created.

In conclusion, take the time to draw up your remodeling project.  It’ll help you visualize your design so you can address all the project elements to your satisfaction.  Drawings will also assist the contractor in understanding the scope of work which in turn should help them provide a more accurate cost proposal to you.  So go ahead and draw it up!
