Real Estate Scammers Alive and Well

If it sounds too good to be true it usually is.

My wife and I own a beach house in Massachusetts that we rent on a weekly basisduring the weeks that we don’t want to use the home.

We use two sites to promote the property. I got an inquiry from someone that wanted to rent our home for 4 weeks in January. During the winter months we get $2,900 per week.

The inquiry was from England and the normal process, I need to get a bunch of questions answered. One of the questions is a list of phone numbers, which this individual didn’t want to share, but let me know the cost didn’t matter. When someone tells me, the cost doesn’t matter, that is a problem.

I let him know that unless I get all of the information that I requested, that I was not willing to rent my home. That was the last I heard from the person that told me cost doesn’t matter.

Watch out, Joe, I got emails from "a doctor in England that will be moving to CT and work at Manchester Memorial Hospital. But logistically he didn't have time to see the property before he starts his new job, so he will mail me a FULL YEAR'S rent by check and I can mail him the key" and "oh, he will send extra, and asked if I can buy him some furniture?". So I should go and buy the furniture out-of-pocket and be reimbursed! Of course he wants to move in in 1 week and the check won't clear for 10-14 days! I have gotten several of these, and reported them to the FBI internet crime bureau. They also will copy and paste pictures I post of a house for sale and repost as a low priced rental with their own phone number as a contact! Both happened on Craigslist.
