Middle Schools Invited to Kingswood Oxford’s Model UN

Building on the tremendous success of last year’s inaugural event, Kingswood Oxford is now accepting registrations for its second annual KO Model UN for Middle Schools (KOMUN), to be held on Saturday, Mar. 22, 2014, from 8:30am-4:30pm.

In March 2013, more than 120 middle school students and their teachers from 13 public, private, charter, and magnet schools throughout Greater Hartford participated in the first-ever KOMUN, conceived and run by Stacey Savin, a lawyer, KO history teacher and Model UN advisor for the past 11 years, along with members of KO’s award-winning Upper School Model UN team.

All middle schools are again invited to participate in this year’s event. No prior Model UN experience is needed, and parliamentary procedures will be taught that day.  Each school will represent an assigned country in various mock UN committees, such as the Security Council, the UN Environment Programme, the World Health Organization, and the UN Commission on Human Rights, where they will discuss current issues and propose solutions. The day will include lunch and an awards ceremony.

Space is limited. Delegates must be sponsored by their school, and all delegations must include an adult; registration fee is $50 per school and $25 per delegate. To reserve a spot, schools must submit a $100 deposit (covering the school and two delegates) by Dec. 2, 2013; registration is first come, first served, and could close before that date. Payment for additional delegates is due by Dec. 15, 2013. To register, visit www.kingswoodoxford.org/KOMUN2014.

KO brings home awards each year from Yale’s Model UN conference in New Haven and also competes internationally. Later this month, 14 KO students will compete in the Yale Model Government Europe conference in Budapest.

“KO is proud to once again be hosting this event, the only one of its kind in our area, and our students are very excited to have the opportunity to introduce the Model UN concept to middle schoolers,” said Savin, who also teaches Model UN at the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth during the summer.

For generations, Kingswood Oxford has offered a rigorous local education with a clear global impact. The School is hosting a Middle School Open House on Sunday, Nov. 17, 1:30-3:30pm; for information, contact admissions@k-o.org.
