Northwest Catholic Students Participate in “No Shave November”

Northwest Catholic students spent November promoting awareness and raising money for prostate cancer research. For $5, students and faculty could purchase a blue ribbon to wear on their backpack, jacket or sweater. Then, from November 13-27, boys who purchased the ribbon were able to go unshaven, while girls who purchased the ribbon were able to add a blue accessory to their hair or wear a blue sweatshirt. All the money raised will be donated to the Northwest Catholic Relay for Life team, earmarked for prostate cancer research. The school has raised $1025 as of November 26.

The idea was proposed by several Northwest Catholic seniors, who wanted to participate in “No Shave November” – a national movement that encourages men not to shave in order to increase awareness of men’s health issues.

“October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and our school does a lot for that,” said Katherine Garger ’14. “We wanted to do something for men as well, and we learned that prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men.”

“This is something that everyone can get involved in,” added Luke Foran ’14. “It is an easy way to raise awareness.” That sentiment was echoed by Christopher Gosselin ’14, who hopes the project will create a feeling of solidarity in the school, saying: “This is something that can bring us all together, supporting a common cause.”

“I am proud that our seniors took on this cause and hope that all of our students will realize what a difference they can make,” said Principal Margaret Williamson.
