Lloyd H. Bugbee Elementary School in West Hartford will offer a new perspective on International Night on February 27, 2014.  For the first time, the event will be multi-generational and highlight the cultural heritage that Bugbee families have inherited, showcase how they are currently preserving these traditions, and portend how these customs may be passed down in the future.  It is crucial that students today prepare themselves for a globalized world, and with close to 40 countries being represented, they will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich diversity that can be found in their own backyards.

It is a fact that today’s world is becoming more integrated, and it has never been more important for students to have a clear understanding of the customs of other cultures.  The event will provide the opportunity for students to draw parallels between their own culture and those of their fellow Bugbee families, and build not only knowledge, but also a true respect for others.

The event, which also coincides with the 2014 Winter Olympics, echoes the Olympic spirit of building a peaceful and better world by educating youth and creating mutual understanding with the spirit of friendship and solidarity.

Bugbee’s International Night will be the most robust effort to date-with grandparents, parents and children coming together to share their unique traditions, and allowing families to gain a broader perspective on the world.  There will also be more cultural offerings, including a talent show, art, dress, music, dance and sport and International Café featuring homemade food from around the world.  There will be educational activities within the school in the lead-up to the event to allow students to benefit from an interactive learning experience that goes beyond the classroom.

"Over the past few years, Bugbee has grown and expanded, and been honored as both a state "School of Distinction" and as a national "Blue Ribbon School" - awards we are pleased and proud of. But at the end of the day, what really matters is the experience of each individual child here at Bugbee. Celebrating our kids - and the families, heritage, and history they come from - demonstrates the beautiful true diversity of our school, and the long history of connectedness we demonstrate.", said Noam Sturm, Bugbee School Principal.

Over 200 multi-generation families are expected to attend International Night, where students will be given world maps which will provide a geography lesson as they explore Egypt, Ecuador, Croatia, Bangladesh, Slovakia, Morocco, China, Philippines, Pakistan and more.

Fourth grade teacher and event organizer, Dahlia Cherny, said, “We, at Bugbee, are a special and unique community. We believe in celebrating our international cultures and traditions.  We invite all of our families and friends to join us.  We welcome our alumni, as well as our present and future Bugbee citizens to this one of a kind, cross-generational event, including the parents and grandparents of our students."

Cultural Heritage Night is open to Bugbee families and will begin at 6:00 pm at the school, located at 1943 Asylum Avenue in West Hartford.  For more information, please contact Rose Balesano at 860-233-1234.
