Concerning the Privatization of the Veteran's Memorial Skating Rink

To Whom it may Concern:

I am writing in regards to the privatization of the Veteran’s Memorial Ice Skating Rink. I understand that the town wishes to no longer manage this facility in the interest of cutting costs. As a life-long resident of the town and patron of the rink, I am troubled by the impending loss of this facility from the great range of recreational options I am afforded as a tax payer in this town. I have remained here for many years as I value very highly the services and facilities provided by the town. More so, I value the unique sense of community this fosters.

A community is, in its most basic sense, a group of people with a common bond or interest. What better example of this than the patrons of The Rink? From their Learn to Skate program, to their hockey sessions, to public free skate sessions, the rink serves an essential function to those who participate in their array of engaging activities. From a social standpoint, it gives parents an opportunity to have a cup of coffee from the snack bar and socialize during their children’s classes. Friday night skating sessions that provide a safe, appealing environment for our children to spend time with their friends, and a much needed outlet for adolescent energy. The benefits extend to those of every age and ability. One of the most impactful benefits to me that is offered at the rink, are the summer camps, which are as I understand, completely managed, planned, and funded in house. I question which other town facilities are as self-supportive and give as much back to the community as The Rink?

I fear that, as in other towns, if The Rink is privatized, we will lose all of these benefits. It is not hard to imagine the impact of a facility changing from a town run entity to a for profit, privately held one. The almighty dollar has a way of changing even the most well intentioned ventures. The Rink is no exception. Before this, it was the Cornerstone Aquatics Center, Fairview Cemetery (a prime example of how privatization is NOT always the answer), and a portion of the facilities at Rockledge Golf Course. Now, it is The Rink? As these town held benefits dwindle, I am forced to question: what benefit will I unwillingly be made to sacrifice next? I also question the Council and whether or not they are truly listening to their constituents and have their best interest in mind. Why did this decision not go to referendum? I can once again, only assume that this decision rests solely in the interest of money; the tax payer’s money. I see this as an opportunity for the council to “slip one under the radar”, as if residents would never notice. We have noticed, and we are opposed.

I ask that you take this information into consideration when making a final decision in this matter. In the interest of our much-loved community, I implore you to step back and remember you are a representative of your community. I understand that financial constraints are a reality. Trust me; I have my own, however you have been empowered to make decisions that consider the full breadth and scope of their impact on our town.

I trust you will make the decision that benefits us in the most favorable way.

Regards;
