Letter to the Editor: Voice Opposition to MDC Proposal

Deadline for public comment is Jan. 31, 2013.

To the Editor:

Please make spoken or written comment in opposition to the MDC proposal to divert Farmington River Basin water out of this basin to The Town of Mansfield and UConn.  They have had water problems for years and have two other proposals which they could accept.  We must urge them not to accept the MDC proposal.
Taking water from our Farmington River Basin will eventually be detrimental to the water within this very basin.
The Farmington River Watershed Association has been muzzled and is not allowed to speak out publically on this matter, but we can.  After years of study by the FRWA and the Wild &Scenic Committee for the designation of the Farmington River and Salmon Brook as a Wild & Scenic River, we know that the Farmington River Watershed is a beautiful healthy and viable area in every way at this time.
A small diversion from our watershed might not be noticed at first, but this will increase.  Our own needs could increase.  Global warming and drought can affect the flow of water into our watershed.  Over time, sharing our water out of our basin will become seriously detrimental to our water supply.  The flow is not infinite.
In years to come, our children will ask why something was not done to protect The Farmington River and it's basin.  Our children might ask us to tell them about the time when we could jump off the rope swing in Tariffville Park where the water was deep, or watch the eagles soar above the River searching for prey in the healthy habitat.  Fishermen, kayakers, hunters, hikers, will all be affected as well as Tourism, realestate and the economy of our region as the amount and condition of water declines.
People of Tariffville, Simsbury, Granby, East Granby, Windsor, Bloomfield, Avon, Canton, Collinsville, Hartland, East Hartland,  everywhere--please let your voices be heard.
What can you do?

  • Tell all your friends and neighbors
  • Call UConn main office and tell the President that this is not a good idea.
  • Choose one of the other proposals.

Come to a public hearing on Tuesday January 22 at 7 p.m. in the Human Resources Training Room, UConn Munson Bilding 16 Munson Road, Farmington, CT.  Don't want to speak?  Come anyway if you can.
