Patch's Poll: Can Jerry Sandusky Get a Fair Trial?

Media outlets across the country flooded central Pennsylvania this week to cover the high profile sexual assault case involving the former Penn State coach.

Trial proceedings for former Penn State Assistant Football Coach Jerry Sandusky were officially under way this week in the high profile sexual assault case involving young boys that shook the college world last fall.

The Associated Press reported that three of the 16 jurors and alternates needed for the trial were selected Tuesday morning and jury selection is expected to continue into the coming weeks.

Sandusky faces 52 criminal counts and potential penalties stemming from alleged sexual abuse against 10 boys, officials said. If convicted, he faces life in prison, the AP reported.

But, as the AP story noted, one of the jurors is a woman who has been a football season ticketholder since the 1970s and her husband works for a medical group where the father of a key witness works.

Jean Casarez, a CBS reporter, recounted how she spoke with several people during the jury selection coverage who know Sandusky personally in State College, PA, where Penn State is located. Members of the community, Casarez said, expressed disbelief at the allegations.

"I think it may be difficult," Caserez said in response to a question about whether there could be an impartial jury. "But this is where Jerry Sandusky wants the trial, and he might be smart about it."

Given the fact that Sandusky, and Penn State, have so many supporters in this area of Pennsylvania, along with the intensive media coverage in the case, can Sandusky get a fair trial from an impartial jury? Take our poll and add your thoughts in the comments.

Having served on a jury 3 times, you always have beliefs about what is right and wrong, and you bring these beliefs into the jury room. Each time I have served, I felt it was an honor. You try very hard to take all the facts as presented by the attorneys, and form an honest decision based on the instructions of the Judge. You can only hope that if you were charged with a crime, that your jury would work very hard to determine the truth among the facts.

No matter what a juror believes when he or she enters the courtroom, human nature of truth, honesty, fairness and your gut feeling of right and wrong prevails. After all, once the case is presented, the gut feel of the jurors is what really helps them make their decisions.

Most of the jury have direct ties to Penn State. I find that appalling.

I'd be more worried if most of the jury had direct ties to pedophilia.
I would assume that it would be pretty difficult to find people in Pennsylvania who DON'T have some kind of tie to Penn State. Think about it. I bet most of us have some kind of tie to UCONN. A family member went there. A friend went there. A friend's family member went there. Once again, I think the media is trying to make a story were one simply does not exist.

Yes, he can have a fair trial. Like any other senstionalized case, juries are selected/eliminated by both prosecution and defense and moral and ethical requirements are explained. If he is convicted, it is because of the graphic testimony of his victims and not because of the media.
