A portion of the federal health care law mandating that employee-sponsored health coverage include birth control went into effect on Wednesday.
The Health and Human Services mandate, which is part of the Affordable Care Act or “Obamacare,” requires that private insurers must include contraceptive coverage in their plans without charging a co-pay, the Huffington Post reported.
The mandate has been one of the most contentious parts of Obamacare because it draws into question whether it violates religious freedoms, forcing institutions like the Roman Catholic Church to go against its conscience and provide coverage for something it doesn't believe in.
The Church has been in stark opposition to the mandate, and many Republicans have argued the same, the Huffington Post reported.
Meanwhile, Democrats and women’s rights groups have said it’s an advancement in women’s reproductive rights.
