Patch's Poll: How Tan Is Too Tan?

A case in Nutley, N.J., in which a mom is accused of taking her 6-year-old to a tanning salon has made us wonder. Take our poll and add your thoughts in the comments (and please, watch the video).

The mother in Nutley, N.J., who is accused of tanning her young child at a local salon to the point of causing a sunburn says the kid was merely waiting for her while she tanned.

Whatever actually happened, the woman has become an Internet sensation because of the extent that she has "tanned" (or oranged) herself.

In Connecticut, a bill failed in the General Assembly this session to require teenagers to get parental permission to tan.

What do you think? Do you tan? Is there such a thing as too tan? How many times have you watched that mom on YouTube? Take our poll and add your thoughts in the comments.

Well first off, they shouldn't be publicly alleging anything if they don't know the full story. She has every right to tan herself as much as she pleases and look as crazy as she does. I would hope that the public would not be expected to pay for her cancer treatment however. Given the insane amount of restrictions and regulations that are in place on tanning places already, I would be shocked if they actually allowed the girl on a tanning bed... it would be a death sentence to their business instantly. People should not judge others based on their choice of how to live their life, and they should not judge others until all of the facts come out.

I agree with Andrew. I'm uncomfortable with the body-shaming surrounding this story in the news.

My mother died of melanoma (aggresive skin cancer). She didn't seek to tan either. It was fast and very furious - anyone who has seen melanoma would never try to tan. As far as this woman's story - when I first saw the pictures of her, she wasn't nearly as dark as she appeared in the pictures as the story progressed. I think there's a little photoshop going on here. Also, even though I don't understand the tanning craze, I think she has the right to do what she wants. I think she's being treated badly in the press - I just hope she can cover the cost of her cancer treatments.

Thank G-d the tanning salon revoked her membership.

It's about vanity and public shaming. Yes, she's too tan by public standards and I join the chorus of people not understanding the whole tanning culture. I know people battling melanoma and it's not a fun situation. That said it's our right to go tanning and this story is more about the general public's need to shame people.
