Patch's Poll: Is Climate Change a Top Environmental Concern for You?

A new poll shows the number of people who put global warming at the top of the list of pressing environmental issues has dropped.

Just as a massive heat wave blasted the United States last week and triple-digit temperature records were set across the East Coast, a new poll released this week shows that climate change is no longer the No. 1 environmental concern among Americans.

According to the Washington Post-Stanford University poll, just 18 percent of responders name climate change as their top environmental concern, while 29 percent identify water and air pollution as their most concerning environmental issue.

By comparison, 33 percent said climate change was their top concern in 2007, the poll notes.

But, as the poll notes, nearly 75 percent of Americans say the Earth is warming and nearly as many say the U.S. government should do something about it.

This week, a massive derecho storm pummeled much of the Mid-Atlantic, and 1.8 million people are still without power, according to Yahoo! News. Also, 3,215 daily high temperature records were set in the month of June, according to the Associated Press.
