5 Ways to Enhance Your Pet Care Without Breaking the Bank

1. Adopt

Most animal shelters and pet adoption facilities charge a fraction of what a cat or dog would cost if you purchased it from a breeder. The adoption fee, which usually ranges between $75-$200 depending on the animal’s age and breed, is used to care for the un-adopted animals, so you can easily justify the cost. We recommend Our Companions

2. Spay/Neuter

Getting your cat or dog spayed/neutered ensures that you aren’t surprised with unwanted pet pregnancies and helps keep animals out of shelters. Low-cost spay and neuter services are available through local animal shelters and Humane Societies. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) also partners with PetSmart Charities to maintain a state-by-state database to help pet owners find affordable programs in their community.

3. Stock Up at Goodwill

Secondhand stores like Goodwill, Savers and the Salvation Army are a great place to find inexpensive beds, blankets, cat towers, stuffed animals, and food and water bowls. Just make sure you give them a thorough cleaning before your pet uses them.

4. Eat Your Fruits & Veggies

Introduce your dog to fresh fruits and vegetables and you will save yourself hundreds of dollars on expensive dog treats. Carrots tend to be a pet favorite, but apples, blueberries, celery and pears make great treats as well. Be sure to wash all fruits and veggies and remove pits and seeds before giving them to your pet.

However, you should steer clear of citrus fruits (grapefruits, limes and lemons), grapes, raisins, corn, garlic, onion, rhubarb and wild mushrooms, as they can cause allergic reactions, kidney failure and upset stomach.

5. Exercise

Never take a day off when it comes to play time and walks. Exercise keeps your pet healthy and fit, potentially saving you thousands in veterinary care. Busy at the office or going on vacation? Call us and we’ll make sure you can be away from home with 100% peace of mind!
