How to Make Sure You and Your Pet Have a Fun, Safe Memorial Day

With the warm weather upon us, we are reminded that Memorial Day is right around the corner. Have you made arrangements for Fido or Garfield while you are gone? Leave it to the professionals at WH Pet Sitters to take excellent care of your pets while you are away. If you stay home, here are a few precautions to take to ensure you have a memorable holiday and summer.

1.  Don’t Share Food with Your Pets

While it is tempting to share holiday fare with our pets, please refrain from doing so. Warn guests who may think it’s nice to feed your dog that any food other than their regular diet leads to upset tummies and other digestive issues.

2. Keep Insect Repellent Away

Never use insect repellent that is made for humans on pets. It can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and drooling. Make sure that any product used is pet-specific.

3. Keep Lighter Fluid and Other Items Out of Pets' Reach

Keep citronella candles and matches safely stored and out of pets reach. If accidentally ingested, these items can irritate the stomach and central nervous system.

4. Provide Fresh Water and Keep an Eye on Your Pet

No matter where you are celebrating, make sure that your pet always has plenty of fresh, clean water available. Make sure you keep your eye on your dog to make sure they don’t start eating dirt, woodchips or treated plants.

5. Do Not Leave Your Pet in the Car

Pet theft is on the rise. Don’t put your dog at risk with someone who may have bad intentions. Most importantly, never leave a pet in a hot car if traveling. Pets are just as susceptible to heat stroke as humans. Did you know that cars can become hot zones in just minutes? Even if the car is left under a tree with an outside temperature of 78 degrees, the inside of that car can exceed 90 degrees in no time, and if left in the sun, a grueling 160 degrees. Additionally, always be certain your pet is wearing an ID tag with your contact information and collar should you need to quickly grab him.
