Fire at Hillcrest Avenue Apartment Quickly Contained

No injuries reported; Red Cross contacted to assist two residents after damage estimated at $10,000.

A fire caused about $10,000 in damage at a Hillcrest Avenue garden apartment Wednesday and temporarily dislodged two residents, the said.

Firefighters from four of the town’s five stations responded at 2:14 p.m. to a report of an alarm and smoke at 116 Hillcrest Ave., battalion chief Matt Stuart said.

No one in the first-floor apartment was home at the time of the fire, which apparently started on a kitchen stovetop, Stuart said. No injuries were reported.

A teenager and an adult in the apartment were directly affected, Stuart said.

“They’re not able to stay there tonight because of the condition of the apartment but we contacted the Red Cross on their behalf,” Stuart said. “They should be taken care of at least until they can get back into the apartment.”

Residents in two upstairs apartments and another ground-floor residence were evacuated and the fire was under control in 15 minutes, Stuart said. The other residents were allowed to return.

The fire was contained to the kitchen, Stuart said, but there was smoke damage throughout the apartment.

“It was accidental. It’s still under investigation but it looks like it started on top of the stove,” Stuart said.

Firefighters from nearby Quint 3 on New Britain Avenue arrived first and were followed by firefighters from Berkshire Road, Prospect Avenue and Brace Road.

Paul Shipman of the American Red Cross said the displaced residents were receiving temporary lodging and financial assistance.
