Updated: Head of Sports Institute Indicted on Charges of Embezzlement, Fraud, Forgery

Dan Doyle Jr. of West Hartford, founder and chairman of the Institute for International Sport, was arrested in Rhode Island.

Dan Doyle Jr. of West Hartford was indicted by a Rhode Island Grand Jury Friday on multiple charges including multiple charges of embezzlement, forgery and obtaining money under false pretenses, according to the Hartford Courant.

According to the Courant, Doyle was arraigned Friday morning in Providence. Bond was set at $100,000.

Doyle, who did not respond to the Courant's reporter's request for comment, was reportedly ordered to surrender his passport and not travel beyond Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Dan Doyle Jr. of West Hartford has been charged by state police in Rhode Island and charged with embezzlement, fraud, and forgery, the Hartford Courant reported Friday.

Doyle, a West Hartford resident who is founder and chairman of the Rhode Island-based Institute for International Sport, has faced controversy stemming from use and documentation of a $575,000 grant from a Rhode Island foundation as well the institute's expenditures of nearly $3 million on properties in North Carolina, according to the Courant story.

In 2011, the Institute for International Sport sponsored the World Youth Peace Summit and Scholar-Athlete Games, which was held at the University of Hartford and other locations around West Hartford and attracted more than 1,000 scholar-athletes from around the world. Speakers included Gen. Colin Powell.

A Peace Walk, which was led by renowned peace advocate and Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, was also held in West Hartford as part of the World Youth Peace Summit.
