I-84 East in West Hartford Reopened After Fatal Accident

One fatality reported in highway accident.

I-84 eastbound in West Hartford has been reopened between exits 41 and 43 after a motor vehicle accident involving an overturned vehicle shutdown the highway for more than three hours, according to the Department of Transportation and media reports.

The West Hartford Fire Department sent Engine 1, Engine 5, Quint 3 and the battalion chief to the scene, according to a fire official. In addition, state police and paramedics also responded to the scene.

The incident remains under investigation, according to the fire official.

According to NBC Connecticut, the crash involved multiple vehicles and one passenger was ejected. Paramedics performed CPR.

The Hartford Courant reported that one person was killed in the accident and that the person was seen lying in the road and was removed by ambulance. 

According to NBC, 19-year-old Stephen Elliott, of Windsor's Amanda Circle, died after after losing control of his Honda Civic, hitting a cement barrier, and rolling over multiple times. Elliot was ejected from the vehicle, and was transported to Hartford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, NBC reports.

The shutdown caused congestion between exits 39A and 43 (2.9 miles) and traffic was being diverted down local roads.

The incident was reported around 3:30 p.m.
