West Hartford Fire Department Group 3 members participated in a Hazardous Materials Refresher Class taught by members of the Connecticut Fire Academy staff. The West Hartford Fire Department received the training free of charge through a Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness grant sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. West Hartford is the first department in Connecticut to receive the training as a pilot program for the Connecticut Fire Academy. On September 7 members of the department will be invited to participate in a certification process that is nationally recognized allowing them to move on to the next level of Hazardous Materials Training to support the Capitol Region Hazardous Materials Response Team (CRHMRT). The CRHMRT offers hazardous materials response and mitigation for the 29 member towns of the Capitol Region Council of Governments. All the members of West Hartford Fire Department Station 3 at 1068 New Britain Avenue are members of the team and are available to respond 24/7 to any hazardous materials incident both in-town and in the region using equipment supplied through federal grants and supported by CT Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.
