Man Charged With Throwing Coffee on Girlfriend

Victim suffered second-degree burns

A 27-year-old man accused of throwing hot coffee on his girlfriend during an altercation Friday night was arrested on charges of second-degree assault, West Hartford Police said.

Police said that Heriberto Baez, of 357 Prospect Ave., second floor, became involved in a domestic disturbance around 9:35 p.m. with Martha Mendez, 42, when she threw a phonebook at him, grabbed the back of his neck and threw room-temperature coffee at him, police said.

Baez then grabbed a pot of hot coffee and threw the coffee at Mendez, causing second-degree burns to her face, according to a police press release.

She was taken to St. Francis Hospital and later transferred to the burn center at Bridgeport Hospital because of the risk of infection, police said.

Baez was charged with second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct. He was held on $50,000 bond and is due in court March 7.

Mendez was given a misdemeanor summons on a charge of third-degree assault and is due in court the same day.
