Man Wanted for Attempted Murder Arrested

West Hartford police apprehend suspect in vicious knife attack after a disturbance on Merrill Street near Bow-Tie Cinemas.

A 22-year-old man wanted for attempted murder in connection with a knife attack two weeks ago in Hartford was arrested by Friday night, police said.

Angel Manuel Rolon of 24 Merrill St., near the town line, is suspected of stabbing a 19-year-old Zion Street man at least 13 times with a steak knife, Hartford police said.

The victim, apparently targeted, was also punched and stomped by a group of men in the foyer of his building as his girlfriend and 9-month-old son watched, said detectives in Hartford’s major crimes division.

Rolon was arraigned Monday in Hartford Superior Court on charges of attempted murder, two counts of first-degree assault and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault. Bail was set by Judge John Carbonneau at $200,000.

Rolon’s address, halfway between Prospect Avenue and New Park Avenue, was listed as in West Hartford by Hartford police and in Hartford by West Hartford police. Property records put Merrill Street in Hartford.

The victim was still recovering at Hartford Hospital with multiple chest and upper body stab wounds.

Another Zion Street man, a 40-year-old, was stabbed in the abdomen when he apparently got in the way during the attack at 147 Zion St., Hartford police said. He was released from Hartford Hospital June 17.

Rolon was arrested at about 9 p.m. after a disturbance at the Merrill Street apartment building, a half-block from the complex.

“It was a fight over money,” West Hartford Lt. Stephen Estes said.

Rolon was charged with breach of peace and threatening.

Hartford detectives, who received a warrant for Rolon’s arrest June 24, said the attack by Rolon was carried out with an unarmed accomplice. The alleged partner was a former resident in the Zion Street building who had accused the most seriously injured victim of burglarizing his apartment in December, Hartford police said.

Rolon was previously known by the targeted victim and was also identified through photos, according to a court affidavit. The older victim also picked out Rolon in a photo array.
