Police Step Up Patrols Around Schools

Town's third incident of a "flasher" reported near Norfeldt School; man also exposes himself near elementary school in Simsbury.

have increased patrols around town schools after a man allegedly exposed himself to a student on Monday.

West Hartford detectives are also comparing notes with Simsbury police after a similar incident near an elementary school in that town.

The Norfeldt schoolgirl told police she was approached on Barksdale Road by a white man in his 50s who was driving a tan four-door sedan. He was wearing a red and white striped shirt and no pants, police said. The girl’s father called police at about 4 p.m.

The incident was the third reported to police since January. A man in a silver vehicle exposed himself to an 8-year-old Jan. 20 on Westminster Drive near the , and a man in a silver vehicle also exposed himself to a 12-year-old girl Feb. 16 near , police said.

There have been no arrests.

In Simsbury, police were investigating an on Musket Trail where two girls said a white man exposed himself around 3:30 p.m. Police said the man was 60- to 70-years-old, around 5-feet-10 with gray hair and driving an SUV or station wagon.

West Hartford police Officer Robert Riccobon of the community relations division said Thursday that investigators from both departments had been in contact to determine if a connection exists between the incidents. They had not formed any conclusions, Riccobon said.

In West Hartford, parents and guardians of schoolchildren across town were notified by email of the Norfeldt School incident.

The email from Norfeldt principal Caryn Joyce Falvey said in part, “We urge you as parents to have a discussion with your children about strangers. Make sure they use the Three Rs (Run, Remember and Report) if they are approached. It is particularly important for children to report such incidents to an adult immediately.  Also, please make sure your children know whom they should contact if you are not at home. Here at Norfeldt, we are reviewing all of these cautionary steps with our students.”
