Report: Woman Passed Out Drunk in Running Car Unknowingly Had Fender-Bender

Middletown Police say an unconscious West Hartford woman who awoke disorientated behind the wheel took her foot off the brake — and sent her car careening down the street.

A 26-year-old West Hartford woman, passed out drunk in her Chrysler with the engine going, unknowingly collided with a cruiser while officers worked quickly to stop her runaway car, according to Middletown Police.

On Feb. 2 at 10:09 p.m., police were called to deKoven Drive about a driver passed out in the driver's seat of a Chrysler 300 in front of Personal Auto Care.

Brittany Rugar, 26, of Foxcroft Road, West Hartford, was unresponsive while behind the wheel, police say. She was hunched over in the driver's seat with her foot on the brake, the report says, and the car running with the shifter in the drive position.

Finally, police say, Rugar woke up from the knocking on the window, dazed and confused. He head was rolling around, police say, and as she tried to stay awake, took her foot off the brake and the car rolled forward, ran the red light at Union Street and the car picked up speed.

Police had to drive a cruiser ahead of her car to stop her with the rear bumper, hitting it at 10mph and coming to a stop, the report indicates.

"Ruger was completely unaware she was just involved in a minor motor vehicle accident," the report says, and failed a sobriety test. Her blood alcohol levels were .1835 and .1661.

She was charged with driving under the influence.
