Man Charged With Trespassing — Inside Police Headquarters

An apparent bathroom break went wrong early Sunday at police station on Raymond Road in West Hartford.

An apparent bathroom break went wrong, very wrong, for a South Windsor man who was charged by with trespassing at police headquarters on Raymond Road in the wee hours of Sunday.

Matthew J. Deffley, 24, of 13 Country View Drive in South Windsor, was charged with trespassing and interfering with an officer after he was discovered wandering off-limits in a hallway at the station around 4 a.m., police said.

A detective observed Deffley walk into the police lobby toward a public bathroom, police said. Instead of entering the bathroom, however, Deffley walked through the doors to the police training room, police said. Deffley found his way through the dark, unlighted room, entered a kitchen, then the main hallway on the first floor, police said.

“The training room doors are usually locked at that hour,” Lt. David Dubiel said Monday. “I am unaware of a breach of that nature in the past.”

Lt. Tracey Gove and Officer Peter Kisela spotted Deffley in the corridor, police said. Deffley allegedly disregarded a request to identify himself and started running, police said.

Gove and Kisela caught up with Deffley as he was exiting the building in the garage area.

“Deffley appeared disheveled, and I smelled an odor of an alcoholic beverage,” Kisela said in his report. “Deffley was unable to explain who he was and why he was in the police department.”

Deffley apparently fits the description of a man who allegedly caused a disturbance in a cab in the area of Trout Brook Drive and Farmington Avenue, not far from the police station, police said. The cab patron had left the scene before police arrived.

Deffley was released into the custody of a parent on a $500 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Hartford Community Court Tuesday.
