UPDATE: Suspect Cut Window Screen in West Hartford Home Invasion, Assault

The suspect is accused of chasing the victim and hitting her before fleeing with cash and jewelry.


West Hartford Police say the suspect who is accused of pulling off a brazen daytime home invasion in which an elderly resident was assaulted when she confronted him, cut a window screen to enter the home.

It was shortly after 2 p.m. June 24 when the woman found the suspect rifling dresser drawers in an upstairs bedroom of the home in the 1500 block of New Britain Avenue, according to a police report. "He then chased her down the stairs where he assaulted her," according to the report.

The suspect, identified as Luis M. Ortiz, then fled with cash and jewelry including a wrist watch. After a chase involving police canines, Ortiz was caught about an hour later at the end of Holmes Road in Newington near the new Busway construction project.

Ortiz was charged with home invasion, first-degree burglary, third-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny, third-degree assault on an elderly person, third-degree criminal mischief and interfering with an officer. 

Ortiz was being held in lieu of $250,000 bond and is due in court on Wednesday.
