Wedding Cake Knife Assault Charges Follow Prior Domestic Violence

Louis Dejesus faces multiple charges, including first-degree assault; couple was in violation of mutual protective orders stemming from earlier episode of violence.

The heart may have its reasons but so do protective orders.

In a bizarre and bloody Valentine’s Day weekend incident, one half of a West Hartford married couple was in Hartford Hospital Monday and the other half in Hartford Superior Court after intervened in an assault. The weapon was the couple's wedding cake knife, police said.

Louis G. Dejesus, 23, stabbed his wife, Crystal Lee Dejesus, 24, in a second-floor apartment at 538 South Quaker Lane Saturday night during a violent quarrel before he stabbed himself four times in the abdomen and four times in the right leg, police said.

When Louis Dejesus is released from the hospital, he will face multiple charges, including first-degree assault, threatening and violating a protective order. He will be held on $500,000 bond, police said.

Crystal Lee Dejesus, who was released from Hartford Hospital after treatment for a thigh wound, also was charged with violating a protective order. It was unclear why the couple was together in violation of court orders.

The protective orders stem from another domestic violence incident. Louis Dejesus, who has served time for an attempted robbery in Newington, and Crystal Lee Dejesus were each charged with disorderly conduct Sept. 25 and recently entered the family violence prevention program, according to court records.

Crystal Lee Dejesus was accused by her husband of infidelity, apparently sparking Saturday’s assault, police said. In September, Louis Dejesus was accused of infidelity by his wife and sustained a bloody lip and a bite mark while a passenger in a car driven by his wife, police said.

When police cruisers arrived Saturday around 11:30 p.m., officers heard a fight and forced in the front door. When Louis Dejesus noticed police arriving through a window, he allegedly told his wife he was “not going to jail” and began stabbing himself, police said.

Crystal Lee Dejesus entered the family violence program on Dec. 20 and her husband one month later. They had 12 months to successfully complete the program before charges against them would be dropped.

Louis Dejesus pleaded guilty to attempted robbery Oct. 8, 2008, and was sentenced to 10 years in jail, suspended after 18 months.
