West Hartford Police Arrest Man on Sex Assault Charges

Amalio Santiago, 67, of Hartford, faces first-degree sexual assault charges, among other things.

A 67-year-old Hartford man was charged by West Hartford Police on July 23 with four counts of first-degree sexual assault.

Amalio Santiago, of 23 Wilber St., was served with an arrest warrant at a lockup in Hartford Superior Court, according to West Hartford police.

Santiago was also charged with impairing the morals of a minor, according to police.

Under Connecticut state law, first-degree sexual assault is defined as the following:

  • when a person compels another person to engage in sexual intercourse by the use of force or by the threat of use of force against another person;

  • when a person engages in sexual intercourse with another person who is under 13 years old and the actor is more than two years older than such person; or

  • when a person engages in sexual intercourse with another person and such other person is mentally incapacitated to the extent that such other person is unable to consent to such sexual intercourse.

West Hartford police declined to elaborate on the arrest, other than to say the alleged assaults took place in multiple towns over an extended period of time.

Santiago was held on a $250,000 surety bond and was scheduled to appear in Superior Court on July 23. Santiago is facing similar charges from arrests by Glastonbury, Manchester and East Hartford police, according to the state judicial website.

His next scheduled court date is for a pre-trial and arraignment on multiple cases on Aug. 1.
