West Hartford Woman Dies from Injuries Related to Fern St. Accident

The head-on crash on March 9 was the first fatal accident in West Hartford in more than three years. Four generations of women, including Helen Mehlman, from the same family were injured in the accident.

The 93-year-old woman injured in a head-on collision of Fern St. the morning of Saturday, March 9 has passed away as a result of her injuries.

Dina Schwartz, Helen Mehlman's granddaughter, posted a message on West Hartford Patch's Facebook page on Sunday evening, March 17, updating this story with the sad news that Mehlman died Sunday morning as a result of her injuries.

West Hartford Police issued a report Monday morning, also stating that Mehlman, who was born on Nov. 27, 1919, "died from injuries received in a motor vehicle accident on March 9, 2013." Mehlman lived at 1 Hamilton Heights, police said.

Mehlman had previously been in critical condition at Hartford Hospital.

According to police, at the time of the accident Mehlman was a passenger in a 2011 Toyota Camry driven by her daughter, Linda Schwartz, 66, of Huntington, NY. Schwartz was headed east on Fern St. near the intersection of Fernwood Rd., when according to police she collided head on with a 1997 Toyota Corolla driven by Jeffrey Schiavone, 37, of West Hartford.

In addition to Mehlman, Schwartz's passengers included her daughter, 37-year-old Meredith Siegel and granddaughter, 4-year-old Madelyn Siegel. Madelyn Siegel was secured in a child safety seat, police said. The four generations of women were en route to a Bar Mitzvah at Congregation Beth Israel, police said.

Police said Monday that the accident is still under active investigation.

According to police, this is the first fatal accident on a West Hartford roadway since October 2009.
