Connecticut Tourism Going to the Dogs?

The state sees new tourism dollars in finding and highlighting “dog-friendly” places in its “Still Revolutionary” tourism campaign.

They protect our homes and love us unconditionally. Now our dogs could help boost our state’s tourism industry.

At least, that’s the view of state tourism officials, who want to compile a list of “dog-friendly” attractions in Connecticut, places where visitors can bring the family pet along on vacations or daytrips.

That’s what Skip Bergstrom, deputy commissioner of Connecticut’s Department of Economic and Community Development, recently told Diane Smith during a television interview on the state’s $27 million “Still Revolutionary” tourism campaign.

Connecticut’s tourism industry relies heavily on visitors who drive here from large population centers, such as New York and Boston. Many of those people probably would like to bring their dogs along on those trips, Bergstrom said.

Oh yes, live would be easier if we could bring Cooper along with us when we travel. We do not take weekend trips like we have done before because of him.

Interesting idea. We rarely ever take the dogs with us - too much hassle and it really limits what we can do. Plus, they are happier at home with the dog sitter - traveling can be awful stressful on a dog.

Excellent idea. As a past resident of Farmington and now in Vancouver, British Columbia I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to live in a dog friendly place. Off leash dog city parks, hotels that even provide doggie beds, hotels with greet dogs. We can go almost anywhere over a weekend with Abbey because there are many dog friendly places to stay. The only real restrictions with the dog are in food-related business' ie. grocery stores, restaurants. Go Connecticut. So many more people would travel if taking their loved pet with them.

Posted once and it didn't show up - so lets try again. I have lived in central CT for 45 years and this state has never been dog friendly. As time goes by, the list of places that allows dogs has gotten smaller, not bigger. I am very curious to see this list of dog *friendly* places in this state. The only place that seems friendly to my dogs is my own back yard!

There are area hotel that are dog friendly and many towns and cities in CT have or are trying to build off lease dog parks. Petals and Paws offers lots of social activities for dogs and their owners. The pet related industry is a large industry in CT and I am glad the Connecticut’s Department of Economic and Community Development understands it is.
