Letter to the Editor: Republicans Pleased with Reduced Number of Polling Places

Town of West Hartford reduces polling locations in bi-partisan effort.

March 15, 2012

Dear Editor,

The West Hartford Town Council passed a resolution Tuesday night to reduce the town’s polling locations by more than 50 percent, from an excessive twenty locations to a more “right-sized” nine locations. The resolution, which passed with unanimous support and marked bipartisanship, was first introduced by Republicans during last year’s budget talks. It was defeated at that time due to a lack of support from Council Democrats.

“When you compare the number of polling locations in West Hartford to other towns of similar size and demographics, it’s pretty obvious 20 locations was an overkill. Reducing polling locations is a good idea now and was a good idea last year, and it’s refreshing to know that Council Democrats finally warmed to the idea in a bipartisan effort,” said Mathew Connelly, Republican Town Committee Vice Chairman.

The new polling locations will be first implemented in the Presidential Preference Primary Election, which will be held on April 24, 2012.

It’s no small task to put into operation a change both in quantity and location of polls for an election. Fortunately, because the primary in April is for Republicans, preparation for the change is landing largely in the lap of the Republican Registrar of Voters. That gives me a lot of confidence it will be done right.

Sincerely,

Peter J. Martin

Chairman, West Hartford Republicans
