Patch Poll: Should Voters Be Allowed to Register and Vote on the Same Day?

Committee passes bill would also allow online registration for residents with driver's licenses.

A committee of the General Assembly approved last week a bill that would allow residents to register to vote on Election Day, according to the Connecticut Post.

Republicans in the Government Administration & Elections Committee attempted to amend the bill so that residents would be required to present a photo ID prior to registration to prevent fraud, but failed. Sen. Gayle S. Slossberg, D-Milford, co-chairwoman of the panel, told the Post that seniors and minorities, who are most likely to not have photo IDs, would be discouraged by the amendment and that there hasn't been any previous evidence of voter registration fraud in Connecticut.

The legislation would also create online registration for residents with driver's licenses. Gov. Dannel Malloy and Secretary of the State Denise Merrill . "Many states have already made these reforms and by taking these important steps forward we can include a younger generation of voters and expand participation in our democracy," Merrill said in a statement released by Malloy's office.

Hi Barbara, We are so sorry this happened. Last night we added 200 sites to our great new BetaRead More platform and we think that made our newsletter server go haywire. Our engineers are hard at work to fix this bug and we are hopeful that things will be much smoother on Thursday.
