Saint Brigid School Appoints Shevon Sweeney Hickey Principal

WEST HARTFORD – Saint Brigid School (SBS) appoints alumna, parent, and teacher, Shevon Sweeney Hickey, principal for the 2013 – 2014 academic year.

At the start of the academic school year, parents and students will be greeted by Principal Hickey, as she will no longer be known affectionately as SBS’ first-grade teacher.

Former SBS Principal, and now current Assisant Superintendent of Academics for the Office of Catholic Schools in Connecticut (OCS) Valerie Mara, had her eye on Hickey for several years.

“Shevon was always one of St. Brigid’s most innovative, organized and enthusiastic teachers,” said Mara. “Without a doubt, Shevon has always been just absolutely adored by students, faculty and parents. Her commitment for going the extra mile to celebrate St. Brigid’s success made Shevon the ideal choice to be principal.”

Monsignor Douglas P. Clancy, Pastor of Saint Brigid Church, is extremely pleased with the choice of Hickey for the role. “I am very excited about hiring from within the school, and especially happy Shevon is already so deeply rooted in our community.”

In 1968, when she first walked in the front doors of Saint Brigid School, Shevon Sweeney Hickey knew she wanted to be a teacher but never dreamed of being a principal, let alone principal of her alma mater affectionately known as SBS. A focused, cheerful, and dedicated first-grade teacher at St. Brigid for the past 7 years, Hickey’s career began 20 years ago in the public schools of Old Lyme, Newington and West Hartford.

Hickey’s siblings, her son Garrett and several extended family members and life-long friends graduated from SBS. In fourth-grade, she met fellow student Tom Hickey, who would later become her husband. She is always quick to credit her parents and in-laws for nurturing her faith and loyalty in the school.

“I couldn’t be prouder to take on the role of principal of St. Brigid School, complete with new and exciting opportunities.” Principal Hickey goes on to say, “The diversity at SBS has enriched our student population. Moreover, the multi-cultural make-up of St. Brigid reflects and embraces the unique strength of today's competitive global society.”

As SBS looks forward to the next 50 years on its ten-acre campus in West Hartford, abutting beautiful Beachland Park, it has a 100,000 square foot building and a gymnasium/auditorium that should be the envy of any school in town, and a new principal who is ready to work with her team to keep SBS a great learning environment.

Saint Brigid is proud to celebrate 50 years of strong academics, Catholic values and enriched cultural diversity.  SBS is a full-time faith based educational program committed to educating the needs of students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. St. Brigid is located at 100 Mayflower Street in West Hartford, Connecticut. For more information or to arrange a tour call: (860) 561-2130, ext. 104, or visit us at www. saintbrigidschool.org
