Saint Brigid School Works to End World Food Hunger

West Hartford - During the month of October, students at Saint Brigid School joined in support of the Cross Catholic Outreach for World Food Day initiative to stop hunger worldwide.

The national World Food Day campaign was started on October 16th in 1945, as a result of the United Nations commitment to raise a greater awareness about world hunger. In support, the Cross Catholic Outreach organization coordinates Catholic ministries around the world to distribute life-sustaining food and health supplies throughout the year to people in the United States and abroad.

Under the leadership of Saint Brigid School’s sixth-grade teacher Miss Kathleen Johnson, students donated non-perishable can goods and money, raised through a school sanctioned dress-down day fundraiser. While the money donated went to support the needs of Cross Catholic Outreach for World Food Day, the canned goods were donated to the West Hartford Food Bank.

This wonderful food drive was coordinated by Sodexo Dining Services at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU). “One in every five children in America goes hungry each day. This should not be happening in the United States,” stated Sodexo’s Marketing Manager Alvin Lam. “Sodexo and CCSU are committed to providing non-perishable food items for families in need in our community through the West Hartford Food Bank this Thanksgiving holiday.”

Lam went on to say, “Community food pantries are always in need of non-perishable food items, so please continue to donate to your local food pantry.”

Johnson continued, “The sixth-graders worked extremely hard to bring awareness of World Food Day to the Saint Brigid School community with posters and a bulletin board. Their efforts resulted in a cash donation to Cross Catholic Outreach, as well as boxes of food for our local food pantry.”

“Hunger affects people all over the world including many families right here in communities throughout Connecticut. Although this may not be the plight of our students, we our blessed that they care enough to want to make a difference in the fight against world hunger,” stated Principal Shevon Hickey. “For many of us, the face of hunger is no longer a stranger.”
