American School for the Deaf Playground Gets Boost from Middle School Students' Fundraiser
Article written and submitted by Lee Peters
As part of their Canton Middle School "Odyssey" project, 8th graders Margaret Coleman and Brandon Peters raised over $200 for a new playground at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford.
After 90-plus years of teaching students in the old Gallaudet Building and other buildings on the campus, ASD is building a new state-of-the-art education facility, which is to open this fall.
As part of the design, a Preschool/Kindergarten playground will be installed to allow for full accessibility for all students, including students with physical and multiple disabilities. The money raised will go toward the cost of the playground.
ASD was founded in 1817 and is the first Deaf School in the United States.
