Canton Intermediate Students from Hartford Injured in Bus Accident

Initial reports indicate injuries are not serious.

A few Canton Intermediate School students from Hartford were evaluated at the hospital after an accident involving a school bus Monday evening but officials do not believe the injuries were serious. 

Fourteen students were returning to Hartford on a First Student transportation bus when the accident occurred, Canton superintendent Kevin Case said.

West Hartford police said the incident occurred on the West Hartford/Hartford line at approximately 4:30 p.m.

"The driver of the school bus was traveling south on Prospect Ave and attempted to make a left turn onto Park St in Hartford when the bus was struck by another vehicle traveling north on Prospect Ave," according to a West Hartford police incident report.

Police cited school bus driver Jose Rivera, of 786 Capitol Ave, Hartford, with an infraction for failing to grant the right of way.

Five students were evaluated at the hospital, but school officials believed that none had serious injuries. The West Hartford police incident report said the students complained of very minor head and neck pain.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jordan Grossman and CIS principal Kevin Hanlon responded to the scene, Case said.

West Hartford police are investigating.
