Conard Bests Fermi in Girls Soccer Opener

Chieftains controlled the ball for much of the game.

The girls led at halftime in their season opener, and kept that lead throughout the game, defeating Fermi 4-1.

Early in the half, Conard was called for interference on a direct kick, providing the Falcons with a scoring opportunity on a penalty kick, but the ball was wide to the right and missed the net.

The Chieftains led 1-0 at halftime, the result of an unassisted goal by junior Molly Swanson at with 25:28 left in the half.

The second half remained scoreless, until senior Chloe Karafelis scored on an assist from senior Becky Hoisl with 28:55 left in the game. Two minutes later, senior captain Julia Galanto kicked one in, and Conard was ahead 3-0.

The next goal belonged to the Falcons, tapped in by junior Ashley Kennedy after a corner kick with 16:48 remaining.

Sophomore Elena Santos outran the Fermi defense late in the game, scoring the final goal and securing Conard's 4-1 victory.

"It was a great team effort. I was very pleased with our play out there," said Conard head coach Nick Moffo. "We were winning the ball, and I was very pleased with everyone's effort. I'm very happy," he said.

Conard (1-0) will visit Simsbury Friday at 6 p.m. Fermi (0-1) hosts Tolland Friday at 3:45 p.m.
