Conard Teacher a Finalist for Presidential Award

Conard mathematics teacher Jackie Corricelli will be recognized as a Connecticut finalist at a State Department of Education event.

Conard High School mathematics teacher Jackie Corricelli has been selected as a Connecticut finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), West Hartford Superintend Dr. Karen List announced Thursday.

"I have tremendous admiration for her commitment, facility with the art and craft of teaching, high expectations, rapport with all constituents, communication skills, resourcefulness, integrity, entrepreneurial talents and depth of content knowledge. This recognition is well deserved," List said.

According to the release, the PAEMST award has been presented each year since 1983 to K-12 mathematics and science (including computer science) teachers in recognition of "those teachers who develop and implement a high-quality instructional program that is informed by content knowledge and enhances student learning."

Up to 108 awards are presented each year, to representatives of each of the 50 states as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and the U.S. territories. The award has been presented to more than 4,200 educators since the program began.

According to the release, the state finalists "serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science (including computer science) education." The program is administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

State finalists are chosen by a panel of their peers as well as administrators. The state finalists are then reviewed by a national panel of scientists, mathematicians and educators who recommend a finalist for the national award.

According to the release, selection as a national winner includes a $10,000 award as well as an all expense paid trip for two to Washington D.C. for ceremonies that include recognition from the president of the United States at the Capitol.
