Conard Wins Nailbiter in Field Hockey Opener

A late first-half goal by Melanie Newton held up as the only goal of the game, as visiting opened the 2011 field hockey season by edging Fermi 1-0 Tuesday in Enfield.

Newton knocked in a rebound of an Emma Christensen shot with just 48 seconds left in the first half.

Fermi had several scoring opportunities after intermission, but could not convert. Stacey Kraucunas hit the post after a nice rush by Kerry Davis, then Kraucunas led a good rush in the final two minutes, but the Falcons came away empty.
