Destiny Africa Performs at Duffy Elementary School

Ugandan choir performs at the West Hartford elementary school to promote unity.

Seventeen members of Destiny Africa, a Ugandan youth choir comprising children ranging in age from 9-16 years old, sang eight songs at Duffy Elementary School on Wednesday.

All of the choir members reside at the Kampala Children's Center in Kampala, Uganda, where they are nurtured and receive education and support in the face of poverty, orphaned situations and the effects of war, according to a press release.

To commemorate the occasion, Duffy students wore red, yellow and black - the colors of the Ugandan flag - in order to show their unity with Destiny Africa.

“It was incredibly moving to see all of the children come together through a shared love of music and dance and with the mission of supporting Destiny Africa's message of hope for a bright future for all,” said facilitator and Duffy parent Carina Jimenez. “It was a phenomenal event. Everyone got on their feet and were clapping and singing.”

At one point, Duffy children got up and sang with the Ugandan children.

“We wanted to stress to everyone, through song and music, we can find our commonalities,” Jimenez said. “It was a wonderful experience. We talked about our hope of a bright future, of dreams and helping to fulfill them.”
