Duffy Community Appreciates Art Al Fresco

This year's opening of the annual student art show was held outdoors, also celebrating the new Duffy garden.

Guests strolled the grounds, viewing creative and impressive artwork and feasting on yummy treats Thursday night at Duffy Elementary School in West Hartford.

Some of the artists were 5-year-olds, and the guests were mostly parents and siblings, but the event held in the new Duffy garden was no less impressive.

Duffy art teacher Liz Schott, who is on the committee for the garden, was working on a way to promote interest in the new space.

"I love outdoor sculpture gardens and I thought having one the night of the art opening would really be fun and highlight the space. I came up with a sculptural concept for each grade level so the whole school would be included," Schott said.

Although some of the projects on display were created by groups of students, most were crafted individually and she said approximately 450 pieces were on display Thursday night.

The opening night reception was made even more festive with twinkling lights and food provided by Duffy's Health and Wellness committee. Music teacher Marilyn Holcomb arranged for entertainment by the Duffy choir.

"Thanks to the beautiful weather and a lot of volunteers the night was a grand success. I think all the children were really proud to see their work presented in such a different way," said Schott.

"I look forward to creating more work with my students that can actually 'live' in the garden permanently," she said.
