Eight Northwest Catholic Seniors Commit to Collegiate Sports

Letters of Intent were signed on Friday, Feb. 15 in West Hartford.

Eight more Northwest Catholic seniors have announced their intentions to compete in high-level collegiate sports.

These student-athletes are Jacqueline Denver ’13 (basketball at Iona College), Joseph Doyle ’13 (cross country and track at Bates College), Jessica Fontaine ’13 (soccer at Quinnipiac University), Brendan Fox III ’13 (baseball at Bates College), Sarah Gillespie ’13 (track at Harvard University), Anne Higgins ’13 (soccer at Connecticut College), Cathy Higgins ’13 (soccer at Connecticut College), and Galo Rodriguez ’13 (track at the College of the Holy Cross).

Jacqueline Denver of New Britain has been a member of the basketball team for the past four years and was named All-Academic her sophomore and junior year. She has also played Volleyball and been a member of the Outdoor Track team.

Joseph Doyle of Glastonbury has had a very successful running career at NWC, being part of three State Championship track teams. In 2012, he finished 4th in the Class SS Cross Country State Championship and also ran in the State Open. He was named team MVP, All-State, All-Conference and All-Academic. He is a member of the school record-holding 4x800 meter relay team in Indoor track and was named All-Academic for Indoor and Outdoor Track last year.

Jessica Fontaine of Enfield has been named a Girls’ Soccer All-American for the past two years. In addition to the All-American honors, Fontaine has been named All-State and All-Conference multiple times and is a two-time CCC West Player of the Year. She was also All-Academic all four years. In 2012, Jessica broke the single season record for points this season with 73 points (29 goals, 15 assists) and was the team’s 2012 MVP. Over her four seasons at NWC, she was part of three State Championship soccer teams.

Brendan Fox III of West Hartford has been a member of the baseball team since his freshman year. He was part of the 2012 NWC CCC West Champion baseball team and was named All-Academic his sophomore and junior year. He has also been a member of the basketball team for four years.

Sarah Gillespie of Manchester has had an impressive track career at NWC, including holding over a dozen school records and several conference and state records in both Indoor and Outdoor track. In 2012, she was the Outdoor Track State Open Champion in the 1600 meter and the Class M State Champion in both the 800 and 1600 meter. She was also named All-State, All-Conference and All-Academic as well as team MVP. For the 2011-2012 Indoor Track season, Sarah was Class S State Champion in both the 1000 and 1600 meter and the State Open Champion in the 1000 meter. She was team MVP and named All-New England, All-State, All-Conference and All-Academic. She has also been a member of the NWC volleyball team for four years.

Anne Higgins of West Hartford has been a member of the soccer team since her freshman year and was part of three State Championship teams over those four seasons. She has been named All-Academic twice and was named All-Conference this past season. Anne has also been a member of the lacrosse team at NWC.

Cathy Higgins of West Hartford was also part of three State Championship soccer teams in her four years on the soccer team. Cathy was named an All-American this past season and All-New England in 2011, and was also All-State, All-Conference, and All-Academic for the past three years. She has also been a member of the lacrosse team since freshman year.

Galo Rodriguez of Hartford has also had an impressive track career at Northwest Catholic and holds the school record for the 55 and 110 meter hurdles. In 2012, Galo was the Outdoor Track State Open Champ (110 hurdles) and was named All-New England, All-State, All-Conference and All-Academic.
