In recognition of Black History Month, the West Hartford African-American Social and Cultural Organization (WHAASCO), The Noah Webster House and the West Hartford Public Library will co-sponsor a presentation by former Tuskegee airman, Connie Nappier, Jr.
After graduating from Weaver High School in Hartford in 1943, Mr. Nappier enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps with the dream of becoming a pilot. Trained to fly as part of the 'Tuskegee Experiment', Nappier earned his wings and became an officer. Along with 100 fellow officers, Nappier was arrested for disobeying Jim Crow laws established at Freeman Field in Indiana and sent to the stockade at Goodman Field in Kentucky. It took an order from President Truman to release these soldiers. In 2007, Nappier received the Congressional Gold Medal for his service to the United States.
The program will begin at 3 in the meeting room of the Noah Webster Library. The snow date is February 12, 2012
