It Was a 'Peace Day' Celebration at Charter Oak

On Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, Charter Oak International Academy joined millions of people around the world to celebrate the International Day of Peace.

“Peace Day” was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981, and in 2002, they declared Sept. 21 as the permanent date. At Charter Oak, students, staff, families and local elected officials gathered around the flagpole to pledge commitment to creating a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

As an International Baccalaureate World School, Charter Oak encourages students to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. Our students study issues of global significance, resolve to find peaceful solutions, and take action towards a better future for themselves and others.

During this event, 5th grade students sang the “Peace Round.” Speakers included students from Charter Oak and students from Conard High School’s Human Rights class. All children recited a Peace Pledge, and the event culminated with the “planting” of handmade Pinwheels for Peace on the front lawn.
