Last Chance to Claim 'Most Unique Mascot' Honors for West Hartford

USA Today's 'Most Unique High School Mascot' regional competition has been extended, and Kingswood Oxford is still neck-in-neck for the top honors.

Kingswood Oxford's Wyvern is still in the running to be selected as the region's "Most Unique High School Mascot" and move on as a contender for national honors in USA Today's contest.

The Wyvern handily defeated the Avon Old Farm's Winged Beaver in the initial state competition, receiving 54,577 votes in seven days of online voting. Avon Old Farms was the next closest competitor with 32,458 votes.

Kingswood launched the regional round with a pep rally on March 6, kicking off the regional round which was supposed to end at 3 p.m. on March 14.

"There was so much traffic [Thursday], USA Today's servers crashed. Many times. So they decided to extend the regional round of voting! We will be back at it for 48 hours – Monday, March 18, 3 p.m. until Wednesday, March 20, 3 p.m.," said Michelle Murphy, Kingswood's director of communications and marketing.

"We did get more than 1 million votes in this round, and we were in a TIGHT race with a school in Maine when the whole thing crashed. So we are resting this weekend and getting our fingers ready for Monday," Murphy said.

"There is no limit to the number of times a person can vote as long as the Best Mascot Rules are followed," according to the USA Today website, and anyone age 13 or over can vote.
