Mayor Scott Slifka Helps Judge Cub Scout 'Genius Bags'

Cub Scout Pack 148 invited the mayor, as well as Aiken Principal Cathy McKay and her husband Robert, to help judge the inventions the scouts created from items in their "Genius Bags."

On Jan. 18, Cub Scouts from Pack 148 (of , , and schools) used their "Genius minds" to create amazing inventions, displays, and gadgets from a  bag of common materials.

Throughout the year, parents, volunteers and Den leaders collect wire, cups, paper, wood, bits of string and anything else they can get their hands on. There must be approximately 70 of each item. These items are bagged and distributed  by volunteers to every Cub Scout in the Pack before the holiday break. Although the scouts can use their own adhesives and paint, they must only use the items in their bag to construct their inventions.

The Judging

We usually have noteworthy judges visit and spend time in a quiet room with the demanding task of choosing winners. It's a challenge to pick 10 winners (two for each den, in grades 1-5) out of all of our amazing entries ... and we know that all our scouts did their best in using their creative minds. This is a difficult task, indeed, for our judges!

Pack 148 has been running the Genius Bag Competition for at least 12 years in a row now, and the creative imaginations of our Scouts continue to impress us from year to year!

This year, in addition to our own Mayor Scott Slifka and Aiken Principal McKay, our District Commissioner, Amy Casey, from Scout Council was in the crowd that evening and  was very impressed with our Pack's leadership, creativity, and event lineup this year. She reported that Pack 148 is a model of "efficiency" and what Scouting "FUN" is all about.

We have a great time here at Pack 148 andour Den leaders, scouts and scout families are dedicated individuals  who know how to make Scouting a blast!
