Morley Donates School Supplies to Khalaj School in Afghanistan

Total of 14 boxes of supplies shipped.

Student Council worked hard under a tight deadline to get much needed school supplies on a U. S. Military Courier to Afghanistan on Monday, Feb. 13.

Continuing Morley Elementary School’s long-standing tradition of community service in supplying wagons full of food to local pantries, hundreds of back packs and school supplies to local inner-city school children, and warm coats for a southern rural community, Morley’s Global Outreach Initiative 2012 has gone even farther by allowing Morley students to make the world a better place by providing much needed school supplies to the Khalaj School students in the war-torn community of the Nawa district of the southern part of the Helmand Province in Afghanistan.

U. S. Marines and British Armed Forces (BAF) work together and are stationed in the Helmand Province in Afghanistan to maintain peace. It is Morley’s School Principal, Dr. Ellen Stokoe and her step-son, Major Niall Stokoe of the BAF and stationed in Helmand, who worked out the details of this year’s Morley Global Outreach Initiative together in conjunction with U.S. military courier services.

When the 14 boxes of school supplies arrive at the Camps Bastion and Leatherneck in the Helmand Province, Major Stokoe will personally deliver the supplies to the Khalaj School.

The school supplies sent to the Khalaj School include pencils, pens, paper, markers, crayons, notebooks, drawing pads, art supplies, picture books, stickers, erasers, pencil cases and hand made cards decorated by the Morley students to top off each box!

The Town of West Hartford is very proud of the work the Morley students put into this effort with the help of the Morley community to help Afghanistan students gravely impacted by war. It is a clear indicator that the are dedicated to not only educating their students but also preparing them to be citizens of the world.
