West Hartford Bus Drivers to Remain on Job and Continue Negotiations with First Student

No strike deadline set as parties plan a return to the negotiating table in several weeks.

Negotiations between First Student Inc and CSEA SEIU Local 2001, which represents the approximately 110 drivers and monitors who handle West Hartford's school bus routes, ended Friday afternoon without any deal.

CSEA Communications Director Ben Phillips said that the parties will continue their discussions in a bargaining session scheduled for Oct. 18.

On Thursday, approximately 75 of the 110 drivers held an "informational picket" outside the First Student Inc. bus yard on Oakwood Ave. as a show of support for their dissatisfaction at the absence of a contract, and to draw attention to concerns about wages, health insurance, and safety of the equipment.

As of now, no strike deadline has been set.

"The drivers will meet again to discuss the next steps. There is still ground to cover," Phillips said.
