Smith STEM School Sends Two Robotics Teams to the State FLL LEGO Tournament

Smith STEM School prepared two teams for the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League Tournament, which took place this past Saturday at McGee Middle School in Berlin, CT. The focus of the event was a friendly competition between teams of elementary and middle school students who built robots out of LEGOs and then programmed them to move autonomously and accomplish tasks. The game at hand was entitled “Nature’s Fury,” which the FIRST website described as a challenge for students to show “what can be done when intense natural events meet the places people live, work, and play.” Teams identified a problem that happen when a natural disaster occurs, and developed an innovative solution. Each built a LEGO robot using a programmable LEGO Mindstorms kit to complete tasks including delivering an ambulance, transporting people and pets and bringing drinking water to a safe zone.

There were 23 teams at the competition and only 6 were given “Golden Tickets” to advance to the State competition that will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at CCSU.

The Smith STEM MindStorm team won an award and golden ticket for “Robot Performance” and the Smith STEM Savers won an award and a golden ticket for “Robot Design".
